The Barber And Her Skill
Several (three) people have commented recently on my looks. Apparently there’s been a noticeable improvement, which I attribute to three factors.
Firstly, T has learned to use our doorknobs. This means, instead of waking in the night and crying til we come in and comfort her, she wakes, quietly lets herself into our bed, and falls asleep again, leaving me to slumber on soundly and A (who suffers some sort of nocturnal claustrophobia) to toss and turn and experience horrible nightmares and eventually startle awake enough to drag himself into the study and attempt to grab enough rest from what’s left of the night on the sofa bed. So the bags under my eyes are much reduced and A – well, a degree of haggardness becomes a man of a certain age.
The second thing that’s happened is T’s completely dropped her day naps. Now, instead of having thirty or forty minutes in the afternoon to sip tea and read blogs and occasionally chastise myself for not getting on with paid work, I have thirty to forty extra minutes to entertain a three year old, preferably without hearing any more songs by Pharrell Williams or Indina Menzel. We’ve been bathing a lot. I’ve never had so many facials in my life.
And the third thing that happened was I got a new haircut.
Dorena, who was a hair and makeup artist at the Viennese Opera back before her kids started going to the same kindy as my kids, is now a work-at-home mum in Singapore. And when I say “work at home” I mean your home – not hers.
During her stint in Singapore she’s running a mobile hair salon called In Your Style, where she’ll come to your house and unleash her operatic talents upon you. Not only is this convenient enough that I actually managed to get around to it, but you know what they haven’t made an opera about lately? Australian politicians.
I was feeling good about that even before Red Lipstick Mama gave me some style tips. Are you ready for the “after” shot?
If you want to get in touch with Dorena, you can find her on Facebook. If you just want to admire my new hair and/or comment on how far I still have to go with the under-eye bags, you can do so below.
Disclosure: I do know Dorena personally, but she didn’t even know I had a blog until after the haircut, when I was so chuffed I offered to write about her business on it.
The post The Barber And Her Skill, which is a play on The Barber Of Seville which is an opera which, look I know it’s a stretch, but anyway – it appeared first at Journeys of the Fabulist.
Cute haircut! Makes me realize how much I need to update mine.

Yes, time gets away and all of a sudden you realise it’s been sooooo long. And then you book an appointment and the morning of the Big Cut your hair (for once) looks great. I assume that happens to everyone?

I love your new hair cut! The sleeping thing sounds great. I can’t wait until my youngest stops having naps. I am so sick of arranging days around naps.

Yes, it is a pain. I remember that with P. It was a bit different with T as she could sleep anywhere, so the day nap had no downsides – sigh.

learning to turn the doorknob!!! Now, that’s definitely worth a haircut!! 🙂

It was like that scene in Jurassic Park when she first did it, til I realised the sleep benefit.

Yes, flirty, and fantastic, too! You look like you’re not even old enough to have a child who has dropped her final nap, let alone any kids at all! Tip her well 🙂
Side note.. Ironically, I have also had my hair cut by a mobile hair dresser who used to work for an opera who I met through an Australian opera singer..

Oh stop (no keep talking etc).
That’s quite a coincidence about your hairdresser. I’ve never thought of the Viennese Opera as a common and natural precursor to mobile hair dressing.

Too true….
No – no hairdresser picked out yet. Think I’ll leave it until I get home from Melbourne. That’s another month away. I figure a wig will do the trick just as well in a cold climate as a beanie and possibly look better. I’ll look less like a bag lady.
Maybe my usual hairdresser who probably thinks I’ve abandoned her for someone else may help me out when she learns the details.
Surgeon seemed happy when I visited on Monday. He’s put me on 6 monthly surveillance. Right now – happy to be happy with any positive news.

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: The Bard
Always preferred you as a blonde. As for the jokes – just smile and ignore them cause you look fantastic.
Then again – I’m your mother and I’d think you were beautiful even if you had to put a bag over your head because you were scaring all the little kiddies.
Good news – might be needing someone in the very near future like your lovely Dorena who does house visits.

I’ve always wondered about that summer’s day comparison, having grown up in Brisbane where we have those stinking summers. I guess Shakespeare had a different perspective on that one.
Have you got a hairdresser picked out? 🙂

Love the haircut!! My daughter does the same climb in bed with us each night and my husband as well sleeps restlessly while I wake up feeling great! 🙂 I’m also going to steal your idea about facials in the bathtub! 🙂
LikeLike
Do steal the facials/bathtub idea. Not that I imagine I’m the first to ever do it, but I give you my permission 🙂 . We got a strawberry body scrub which T loves because it’s got a cartoon strawberry on the front.
I also love freaking her out by using a peel-off mask. The expression of fascination mingled with horror and disgust as I peel it off is worth everything.

Haha, I will definitely need to try the peel-off!

My three year old just gave up his daytime nap as well… my reaction has been to purchase far too much Lego.
Two questions: does Dorena travel to Hong Kong and will she do light blue? 😉

Oh! See you’re making the connections. I don’t think she goes to HK on a *weekly* basis, but I’m sure she’s up to the shade you’re looking at?

Oh well, maybe I’ll ask my brother. Twenty years ago I dyed his shoulder length hair half neon pink and half black (at his request!). Perhaps he’ll return the favor during my summer trip to America.

Ha! I’m sure he’d be delighted 🙂

A great haircut and a full night’s sleep – bliss! How I remember those broken nights, not fondly I hasten to add.
LikeLike
Yes! Absolutely. Although last night has taught me not to speak *too* soon about sleeping through – I guess for now we’ll just call it an “increased probability” of a full night’s sleep.

What a great idea, someone to give you a haircut in your house. I should really look into that here. Sorry about the no more afternoon nap time, though–I am not looking forward to that day. I need that baby nap time…
LikeLike
Yes, it made a big difference. Here I was trying to work out a time when I could leave the kids at home, and I didn’t have to – they just played around us in the living room.
The nap is good, though… sorry to see it go, but on the other hand, there’s a reason babies sleep so much more and it’s because they’re so much more difficult to care for when they’re awake. Can’t have everything, I suppose.

I was going to go with “Der Zauberschnitt” but those German articles are too confusing. (Den Zauberschnitt?)

Awesome haircut! I must say, when I gave in and let my son join us in bed whenever he woke up, my sleep greatly improved as well. A’s sleep…well eventually he’ll learn to live with it…

I’m not sure if he will, he seems to be such a light sleeper. I’ve suggested he try just, you know, *not* having nightmares and waking up, but he just gave me this look.

Hi Looking good!!!! It brings a lot of lightness and yes it is flirty, sassier too. It is funny because my hairdresser from London is Austrian and she had cut my hair for 10+ years and when I moved to New York, it was like the worst heartbreak EVER!!! xo

Glad you like it! Your suggestions really helped.
My sister lived in Sydney. When she moved she saved up her hair cuts for her visits back. (Eventually this broke down – you can’t fly to Sydney for a hair cut every time…)

Well, I wouldn’t go that far. There’s still plenty flying around the room, almost clonking me on the head, etc.

Dealing with the three-year-old sounds roughest of all! But fun! I’m headed out in an hour to pick up my five-year-old granddaughter. We’ll be finger painting!!

Bless your cotton socks for finger painting. I definitely find it hard to be the entertainment every day. A change of supervisor works wonders, for the child and the usual supervisor. Hope you enjoy it too as a grandparent!

Yes, the day naps are definitely a welcome respite. At least we got a year longer with T compared to P.
