The Barber And Her Skill

Several (three) people have commented recently on my looks. Apparently there’s been a noticeable improvement, which I attribute to three factors.

Firstly, T has learned to use our doorknobs. This means, instead of waking in the night and crying til we come in and comfort her, she wakes, quietly lets herself into our bed, and falls asleep again, leaving me to slumber on soundly and A (who suffers some sort of nocturnal claustrophobia) to toss and turn and experience horrible nightmares and eventually startle awake enough to drag himself into the study and attempt to grab enough rest from what’s left of the night on the sofa bed. So the bags under my eyes are much reduced and A – well, a degree of haggardness becomes a man of a certain age.

...and it was chasing me, and I was trying to run, but it felt as if the weight of a toddler was pressing down upon me...

The second thing that’s happened is T’s completely dropped her day naps. Now, instead of having thirty or forty minutes in the afternoon to sip tea and read blogs and occasionally chastise myself for not getting on with paid work, I have thirty to forty extra minutes to entertain a three year old, preferably without hearing any more songs by Pharrell Williams or Indina Menzel. We’ve been bathing a lot. I’ve never had so many facials in my life.

T puts the finishes off her facial routine with a liberal coating of sun cream.

And the third thing that happened was I got a new haircut.

Dorena, who was a hair and makeup artist at the Viennese Opera back before her kids started going to the same kindy as my kids, is now a work-at-home mum in Singapore. And when I say “work at home” I mean your home – not hers.

During her stint in Singapore she’s running a mobile hair salon called In Your Style, where she’ll come to your house and unleash her operatic talents upon you. Not only is this convenient enough that I actually managed to get around to it, but you know what they haven’t made an opera about lately? Australian politicians.

My last haircut - taken just around the time of the 2013 ALP leadership spill.

I was feeling good about that even before Red Lipstick Mama gave me some style tips. Are you ready for the “after” shot?

I don't think you are, so I'm warming you up with a "during" shot.

The final cut.

The final cut. “Flirty.” I’m told.

If you want to get in touch with Dorena, you can find her on Facebook. If you just want to admire my new hair and/or comment on how far I still have to go with the under-eye bags, you can do so below.

Disclosure: I do know Dorena personally, but she didn’t even know I had a blog until after the haircut, when I was so chuffed I offered to write about her business on it.

The post The Barber And Her Skill, which is a play on The Barber Of Seville which is an opera which, look I know it’s a stretch, but anyway – it appeared first at Journeys of the Fabulist.
